GoldTune

Tangible interaction exploration for elders

Overview

· GoldTune is a intelligent object designed to accompany patients with early cognitive decline through old songs. It helps the patients to find familiar old songs based on multiple strategies such as the birth year of them, rouse themselves and stimulate their memory through listening and singing.

Motivation

When you get old, music can still move you.

In the course of cognitive disease, the language and visual memory pathway are impaired in the early stage. But music memory is relatively free from disease impairment.

Familiar music can stimulate the brain, trigger positive emotional responses and enhance patients’ self-awareness.

Background Research

Professional music therapy is a luxury in China with severe aging problem

Memories disappear, but old things linger

Research through design

We interviewed 4 caregivers of cognitive patients. Prepared rapid prototypes have facilitated discussions to be more tangible.

Design Principles

We summed up 3 design principles to guide the following design, based on the feedback from caregivers and academic research.

Design
